M I N U T E S
A meeting of the Board of School Trustees of the Vigo County School Corporation was held at the Vigo County School Corporation Administration Building, 686 Wabash Avenue, Terre Haute, Indiana on Monday, November 9, 2009 at 7:00 P.M.
The following Board Members were present: Mr. Paul Lockhart, Ms. Alpa Patel, Mr. Mel Burks,
Mr. Tom Thomas, Mrs. Jackie Lower, Mr. Guille Cox, and Dr. Joseph Minnis.
Pledge of Allegiance
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mr. Mel Burks.
Mrs. Christi Fenton, Title I Coordinator, was recognized for being elected President of the Indiana
Association of School Principals. As IASP President, she provides leadership for elementary and secondary school principals throughout the State of Indiana. The association leads in the advocacy and support of all principals in their commitment to every child.
First Call for Citizens Comments
Comments were received from the following: Ms. Kim Long, Ms. Sheri Montgomery, Ms. Pamela Gresham, Ms. Eileen Whalen, Ms. Lieselotte Maher, and Dr. Karen Andrews;
Mr. Burks moved for approval of the Consent Agenda. Mrs. Lower seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
The following Consent Agenda items were approved:
1. Minutes Regular Meeting October 26, 2009
2. Stipend Authorizations
3. Professional Leave Requests
Mr. Orr presented a recommendation to the Board from the Benefits Committee to proceed with the investigation of an On-Site Medical Clinic. He noted that the cost of the clinic would be paid by the health insurance plan assets, and would not come out of the school corporation General Fund. Following considerable discussion, Mr. Burks moved to set up a visit where an on-site medical clinic is in operation, and for the administration to move forward to investigate more information. Mr. Cox seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
Mr. Tanoos presented the Personnel Report for approval.
Ms. Patel moved for approval of the Personnel Report. Mr. Lockhart seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
Booker T. Washington High School
Mr. Mick Newport noted that the Booker T. Washington staff and Central Office staff have met on several occasions to develop plans for the new Booker T. Washington High School, and would like permission to advertise for bids. Mr. Steve Arnold reviewed plans and stated that all plans are well within state guidelines.
Mr. Tanoos, Mrs. Wilson and Mr. Arnold responded to questions from Board Members which included inquiries about the type of roof, Capital Projects Fund, transferring of usable items from current Booker T. Washington to new school on the campus of South Vigo High School, number of students currently enrolled in the program, size of new building, and any financial reason why this project should not move forward.
Following the discussion, Mr. Burks moved for approval to advertise for bids for the new Booker T. Washington High School which will be build on the campus of Terre Haute South Vigo High School. Mr. Lockhart seconded the motion. Mr. Lockhart, Ms. Patel, Mr. Burks, Mr. Thomas, Mrs. Lower, and Mr. Cox voted aye. Dr. Minnis voted no.
Mr. Tanoos requested approval of the Professional Development Schools Grant for Fuqua Elementary School.
Mr. Burks moved for approval. Ms. Patel seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
Second Call for Citizens Comments
Dr. Karen Andrews thanked the Board and administration for all of their time, effort and support of the new Booker T. Washington High School.

Information and Proposals from Board Members and Superintendent Tanoos
Ms. Patel noted that the HINI vaccine is being administered in the schools.
Mrs. Lower commented that schools and offices would be closed Wednesday in observance of Veterans Day.
Mr. Tanoos commended Tapring Goatee, student at Terre Haute North Vigo, for her State Championship honor in the Cross Country track meet.
Mr. Tanoos stated that the Vigo County Commissioners transferred a tract of land adjacent to North Vigo High School to the Vigo County School Corporation.
Mr. Tanoos said we should all remember former South Vigo High School student, Dale Griffin who recently gave his life while serving our country in Afghanistan.
